It is among the oldest federal institutions in addition to the US Congress’s research library. Due to millions of manuscripts, maps, books, photos, and records, this is actually the world’s biggest library collection and is a priceless resource of American history. The library operations are handled by the administrative section.

Established at the Capitol Building at the year 1800, the library eased research work conducted by Congress. President John Adams approved the building and the first collections, worth $5000, consisted of legislation books sourced from England.

The participation of Jefferson was valuable during the years wherein he effectively regulated the operations and set in several important processes in place. The first collection was ruined in the year 1814 when the Capitol Building was ruined as well as the British soldiers set it on fire.

Thomas Jefferson contributed his personal collection of books he had gathered over a span of 50 years on different topics like literature, science, and philosophy. This collection included a number of foreign language books. He had been paid over $20,000 to get a collection of more than 6,450 books.

This was quite a tumultuous period as Charles wanted the Smithsonian Institution to be the official library of the US, whereas Joseph wanted to market the Library of Congress as the national library of the nation houghton library. Joseph was successful in dismissing Charles and transferred the precious collection of more than 40,000 volumes from Smithsonian Institution to the Library of Congress.

In the year 1864, Ainsworth Rand Spofford took over because the librarian and believed in the philosophy of Jefferson which dealt with the universality concept and took efforts to bring in different collections of books from all topics. Due to his efforts, the library became a federal institution.

Afterwards, Spofford made it compulsory for the applicants of the US copyrights to send 2 copies of their work to the library. Soon, there was room crunch as the library was completely flooded with channels, music, prints, books, and photos along with other rich collections due to which a new building was built in Italian Renaissance style and was known as the Thomas Jefferson Building.
