Over the past years, MMA events like the UFC have been gaining serious ground over Boxing. Proof of this is the simple fact that last year UFC pay-per-view events raised more money than boxing events. Boxing promoters and TV commentators are constantly attacking MMA which demonstrates their concern with the meteoric rising of MMA events not only in the U.S. but all over the world.
I am a massive boxing fan myself but unfortunately over the previous five years, it dropped the glamour and the prestige that after made boxing a game to watch. I can’t recall how many nights I stayed up till 4 or 5 in the morning waiting to see Tyson fight.
That is one the biggest difficulty with boxing these days there are not many idols like before. Request any 20 years old these days who’s their favourite boxer; I’ll be amazed if they say any.
Now go and ask the exact same 20 year who is their favorite MMA fighter and I bet that he will state:” Out Of UFC or Strikeforce, in what class?”
In its first days, MMA events were believed barbarous and no TV channel needed to broadcast its fights reddit ufc stream. So what made them change their minds? What affects everything is sports these days, MONEY.
When it started the only way to watch UFC fights was by renting videotapes now you’ve got cable channels dedicated particularly for MMA and the principal events can only be viewed on pay-per-view. MMA merchandising power has grown tremendously and surpassed boxing, why it’s gained so much exposure recently.
There is even a reality show called The Ultimate Fighter that is in its 13th edition, in which amateur Mixed Martial Arts fighters fight to become expert. Thus the fact that many fighting in UFC these days has come out of this reality show.
Even renowned boxing gear brands are creating MMA equipment which is moor proof of the merchandising electricity MMA has these days. Just for the record when Dana White bought the UFC from the Gracie Family, it had been worth 2 million Dollars now it’s a 2 billion dollar business.
But that is not the only reason MMA is more popular than boxing these days. MMA’s audience is composed of its majority of a generation that grew up playing video games like Street Fighter, Tekken and many other fighting games in which characters had different fighting styles that is the essence of Mixed Martial Arts.
This generation is also more dynamic with great eagerness for actions and MMA fights to provide just that. While boxing may get rather boring at times, 12 rounds with no knockdown can be dull, to say the least.
