Every job features a lifecycle. There is an exciting or interesting starting point and then a natural progression occurring over time. After an amount of growth there will be a point when the work will peak. As of this maturity point there may be a change made that enables the cycle to restart, or the work enters the decline and the employee loses interest, becomes complacent, works to just manage, and/or begins the search well for a new job. Whatever the final outcome, most every job experiences this cycle. It can occur over a short period of time if the employee was overqualified or they learned the work duties quickly and now find the task to be too easy or mundane.

A job that is at its peak, when maturity has begun, could also extend for a lengthy period of time – if the employee enjoys this job, decided that is their ideal career match, or they require the income and are pleased with it for now. A job that is in a state of decline is generally experienced as a feeling – perhaps there’s a desire to complete more, perform something different altogether, or there could be a sense of boredom. Regardless of the reason may be for a job in decline, it’s an important reminder that you might want to be in control of one’s career at all times.

Career Self-Assessment

Taking charge of one’s career begins with an obvious sense of self and an established purpose. Another indicator may be working in the same position for an extended period of time without any possibility or hope of changing responsibilities. Before functioning on an indicator, base what you choose to do on your own career plan and goals.

Making a Job Transition
